Large or small

A good Summer Offensive is central, writes Howard Roake

In the seven days since my last column, just £767 has come in to our fund drive, the Summer Offensive, increasing the running total to £10,319.50.

So, although our pace has slowed over the past few weeks, we are still well placed to hit our £25k minimum target and - fingers crossed - go beyond it this year. With just over a month to end of the campaign, lots of promises from comrades yet to be redeemed and plans for various benefit events in the pipeline, I am confident that this year’s SO will be one of the best.

Deserving of special mention this week are WD (another £10 - her fourth this year, in fact); £150 from YM; TB, who has stumped up £90, as has JME from France; and new associate member, GS, who has paid the full whack for a week’s residence at this year’s Communist University - £160.

Speaking of which, the details of this year’s school will be up on the CPGB’s website early next week. It will be good event, with challenging ideas and sharp debates between different trends in the workers’ movement. In particular, Canadian political author Lars T Lih will be joining us to present three openings over the course of the week.

Some of the persistent myths that continue to pass as Leninist ‘orthodoxy’ on the revolutionary left will be picked apart in these sessions and we will get closer to the real, historical Lenin and his true relationship with the political centre of the Second International. The third session, in particular, will be useful in identifying the elements of continuity and change in Lenin’s ideological development post-1917.

A good Summer Offensive is central to building events like the Communist University, to promoting our paper and to building (and protecting!) our website.

So don’t wait to be asked, comrades! Donations, large and small, are urgently required, including from the 10,694 who logged on to read the paper online this week!

Fighting Fund

Keep you posted!

Robbie Rix welcomes another increase in our internet readership

The success of the last few months' fighting funds looks set to continue in November. I can announce a brilliant start, with no less than £387 already in the kitty.

Of course, a good slice of this takes the form of start-of-the-month standing order donations (17 of them, totalling £262, in fact). But there will be rather less of those for the next few weeks. In addition I've just received TR's usual monthly £60 cheque - it's so regular (even with the postal strikes) that it's as good as a standing order.

Finally, we got four handy contributions via our website - £20 each from JS and PJ, £15 added to his subscription to the paper from MZ, plus a tenner from MP. PJ tells me: I've been meaning to make this donation for a while, but have been at the mercy of the capitalists. I know the feeling, comrade. For his part, JS specifies that his is a donation towards the new hardware. I'll be down PC World over the weekend, comrade.

Further good news comes with another increase in our internet readership - we had 16,249 visitors last week. This figure has been increasing steadily since our old website was hit early in the year, but, with the new site gradually being filled out, more and more web readers are now returning.

Most of our archives will be back up hopefully within the next week or so, but unfortunately there is a period of about 18 months that will be missing at first. Their restoration will require a period of "grunt work" from a team of comrades.

Perhaps I shouldn't say this during the current CWU dispute, but I'll keep you posted!
